LOG: In Need of Assistance

York would be lying if he said he wasn't surprised that Delta had called him so soon to arrange to meet up again. That's three times in the last two weeks the man has called for company despite his insistence that he's a busy guy. Not that York's complaining, he enjoys Delta's company more each time they see each other, but he is surprised.

He's on time. Well, Delta seems to be making the effort, the least he can do is return the favor. Once he's inside, he removes his helmet and looks around. Common Ground is a good place, he's enjoyed it's coffee and food a fair few times, and of course it has the delicious, rich scent that comes with any good coffee shop.

Spotting Delta, he weaves through the tables towards him and sits down in the chair on the other side of the table, smiling. 'Hey there.'

'Of course, but that doesn't mean you can never have it.'

"It's easier not to get used to things that I shouldn't expect," Delta counters.

[depthlesslock]

'You don't have to get used to it,' he says. 'Just enjoy it once in a while.'

[protective_logic]

Delta sighs. "If you insist, then I can't convince you otherwise."

But it was wrong to enjoy things the rest of his family couldn't have.

'Why are you so against this?' he asks, honestly at a loss.

[protective_logic]

"Because it's wrong for me to leave them and have things they can't," Delta says softly. "It's just... wrong."

[depthlesslock]

His expression softens as understanding floods through him. 'Oh, D.' And then he can't think of what else to say.

[protective_logic]

"I already have this space they don't. Privacy they don't. External support they don't," Delta lists off quietly. "Eating better than them... would be wrong."

[depthlesslock]

He opens his mouth, closes it again and thinks through what he actually wants to say. 'I can understand that. But... if things get better for you, you can help things get better for them?'

[protective_logic]

"That isn't necessarily true," Delta counters. "Good food for me does not benefit them at all. Not when it is given rather than something I bought myself through work. Because if I can afford good food on my own that means I'm giving the family a lot of money."

[depthlesslock]

He rubs the back of his neck. 'You're probably gonna shoot me down on this but... If I buy the food, you'll have more money to send to them.'

[protective_logic]

That's... reasonable.

"That is also me letting you support me."

[depthlesslock]

He sighs. 'Yeah, I thought that's what you'd say.'

[protective_logic]

"I'm sorry," Delta sighs. "If I'm too much trouble... it wouldn't take long for me to pack up."

[depthlesslock]

'What? Delta, no, of course you're not! Is that what you think? I swear I didn't mean it like that. Like, at all.'

[protective_logic]

Yes, that's what he thinks. He's only given York grief since waking.

"I didn't like your guns, I'm uncomfortable with so much space, I don't know how to handle you buying me food, and I insist on repaying you. You seem unhappy with that."

[depthlesslock]

'No sane civilian likes guns, you're not used to having so much space to yourself, or other people providing for you and it's apparently been drilled into you or else just part of who you are that you repay it when someone does you a favor.' He checks them off on his fingers. 'Everything you've done is completely understandable, Delta.'

[protective_logic]

"I... it was?" Delta asks shyly.

[depthlesslock]

'Of course,' he assures him, taking a careful step closer. 'Honestly, I was an idiot for thinking you'd just be totally cool with everything. Sorry for that.'

[protective_logic]

"You're not an idiot," Delta sighs. "It's just... different experiences."

[depthlesslock]

'Yeah, but I should have thought more about about where you were coming from.'

[protective_logic]

"You have no basis from which to think like that," Delta points out very carefully. "And so I don't want to force that on you."

[depthlesslock]

'How do you know that?' he returns quietly.

[protective_logic]

"Because you don't have seven siblings abandoned by your parents and a missing older brother. You didn't throw out your legal guardian when your older brother turned eighteen to protect your family," Delta hazards to guess.

[depthlesslock]

'Holy shit, you did that?' The words are out of his mouth before he can stop them. Damn, that guy must have been bad. 'All the respect to you and your brother then.'
